The traditional design of LED street lights mainly focuses on the lumen output of the LEDs, with less attention paid to heat dissipation. In fact, the lumen output of LEDs is rapidly increasing. By 2009, the lumen output per watt of mass-produced LEDs had reached 100 lumens, and this value continues to grow quickly. Correspondingly, the theoretical framework of heat transfer has matured, and the heat transfer methods we can use are basically clear: conduction, convection, radiation, and phase change heat transfer. Therefore, in terms of heat transfer or heat dissipation issues, the measures we can take are visible and limited.
The heat dissipation technology for LED street lights generally uses a thermal conductive plate method, which is a 5mm thick copper plate that acts as a temperature equalization plate to distribute the heat source evenly; there are also heat sinks added for cooling, but they are too heavy. Weight is very important in street light systems because the lights are 9 meters high; if they are too heavy, the risk increases, especially during typhoons or earthquakes which could lead to accidents. Some domestic manufacturers have adopted a globally innovative needle-shaped heat dissipation technology, which significantly improves the heat dissipation efficiency compared to traditional plate-type heat sinks, allowing the LED junction temperature to be more than 15°C lower than that of ordinary heat sinks. Additionally, its waterproof performance is better than that of ordinary aluminum profile heat sinks, and it has also been improved in terms of weight and volume. Furthermore, graphite heat sinks developed for high-power LED fixtures also exhibit good thermal conductivity and heat dissipation performance.
To balance the heat dissipation and IP protection of LED street lights in road lighting fixtures, a reasonable design guiding principle is:
a. Use thermal conductive plates at key heat dissipation locations. A thermal conductive plate has fine tubes for coolant flow evenly distributed inside a metal plate, filled with coolant. When a certain part of the thermal conductive plate is heated, the coolant in the fine tubes will flow quickly to rapidly conduct heat. A good thermal conductive plate can achieve a thermal conductivity coefficient 8 to 12 times that of copper plates of the same thickness; although it is more expensive, using it in key areas will greatly enhance the heat dissipation for LEDs.
b. Design the outer shell of LED street light fixtures to resemble a radiator. Most road light fixtures have aluminum shells; directly utilizing the outer shell as a radiator can ensure compliance with IP protection level requirements while providing a large heat dissipation area. Additionally, radiators formed by the fixture's outer shell can be naturally washed by wind and rain when dust accumulates, ensuring continuous effectiveness in their operation.
