Why do solar street lights use constant current sources?

Jan 23,2022

The characteristics of LED lighting materials are greatly affected by the environment. For example, when the temperature increases, the current of the LED will increase, and with an increase in voltage, the current of the LED will also rise. Prolonged exposure to currents exceeding the rated value will significantly shorten the lifespan of the LED beads. LED constant current ensures that the current value remains unchanged despite variations in environmental factors such as temperature and voltage.

2. The constant current accuracy of solar street light power supply: Some power supplies on the market have poor constant current accuracy. For example, popular constant current plans in the market have an error of up to ±8%, which is too large. Generally, a requirement of ±3% is sufficient. To achieve a design plan with 3% accuracy, production power supplies need to be fine-tuned to reach ±3% error.

3. What is the appropriate voltage for solar street light power supply: The recommended voltage for LEDs is generally 3.0-3.5V. Testing shows that most are around 3.2V, so calculating based on 3.2V is more reasonable. The total voltage for N beads in series = 3.2 * N.

4. What is the most suitable current for solar street light power supply: For example, the rated current for LEDs is 350mA, but some factories use it to its limit from the start, designing it for 350mA. In reality, this current generates significant heat. After multiple comparative tests, designing it for 320mA is more ideal. This minimizes heat generation and allows more electrical energy to be converted into visible light energy.

5. How wide should the series and parallel connections and wide voltage be for solar street light power supply: To ensure that the LED solar street light power supply operates within a wide input voltage range of AC85-265V, the method of connecting LED boards in series and parallel is very important. It is best not to use wide voltage; if possible, categorize them into AC220V and AC110V to ensure power supply reliability. Currently, most power supplies are non-isolated step-down constant current supplies; when requiring a voltage of 110V, the output voltage should not exceed 70V, and the number of series should not exceed 23. When the input voltage is 220V, the output voltage can reach up to 156V, meaning that the number of series should not exceed 45. The number of parallel connections should not be too many; otherwise, excessive current will cause significant heating in the power supply. There is also a wide voltage plan where APFC (Active Power Factor Correction) first uses L6561/7527 to raise the voltage to 400V before stepping it down, which is equivalent to two switch-mode power supplies. This plan is only used under specific conditions.
