Are smart streetlights really beautiful?

Sep 10,2021

Many lighting companies are now gradually launching smart streetlights. The introduction of smart control systems allows each streetlight in the city to have an independent IP address, enabling each network-connected light to achieve functions such as geographic positioning, remote control, and online tracking of operational status, while also saving an additional 10-20% energy on top of the original LED energy-saving technology. For example, at the 15th China Western International Expo held on October 23 at the Chengdu New Convention and Exhibition Center, Jinxin Lighting showcased its LED smart streetlights. The supervisor introduced that the LED streetlight terminal can be controlled via a computer, allowing real-time monitoring of each streetlight, clearly identifying which streetlight is malfunctioning, and knowing how much longer each streetlight's lifespan has left, thus achieving digitization. But are smart streetlights really as good as they seem?

Although the application of smart control in LED streetlights is a trend, there are also risks. Industry insiders point out that there are still some issues with the current application of smart control in LED streetlights. 'We have done related applications in different markets, and the problem I see now is that the stability of this system is not very strong yet. In some places, after installing this system, it breaks down faster than the lights themselves.' A representative from Southern Power Grid also stated that the technology for applying smart control in LED streetlights is still immature and lacks system stability. 'As electronic devices, LED streetlights have a failure rate when used outdoors in windy and sunny environments. Now with the addition of smart control systems, the failure rate has effectively doubled.'

In addition to concerns about stability, the actual benefits brought by LED streetlight smart projects remain uncertain. Sources reveal that if LED smart projects adopt a contract energy management model, there are currently no significant economic benefits. 'Maybe I installed this system, and through dimming in the early morning, I can increase the energy-saving rate by 10 percentage points with current technology. However, compared to my investment and the potential technical risks I may bear later on, I might not see significant benefits.' Industry insiders indicate that a smart management system for streetlights will become an urgent need for streetlight management departments but also raise more questions about the scalability of current smart controls. 'The scale of streetlights in a city is definitely expanding continuously. Owners would certainly hope that a system has certain scalability rather than saying that after installing a system this year, it won't be able to adapt because my streetlight scale has changed in two years.'

It seems that there is still a long way to go for smart lighting.
